Measure the handoff, not just the click.

A campaign and a landing page share one job. Your reporting should show where that job gets easier—or harder.

UPSHIFT Journal

Ideas and observations on the thinking behind the work.

A click begins another decision.

A person sees an ad, recognises something relevant and chooses to find out more. On the next page, they have to make another decision. The message, the offer and the practical details all affect that moment.

If the ad and the page promise different things, the journey asks the person to start again. A high level of attention at the beginning can hide a weak handoff in the middle.

Review the journey as one piece of work.

Put the ad beside the page it opens. Read the headline, look at the image and follow the call to action. Is the promise recognisable? Is the next question answered? Is the requested action proportionate to the interest the ad has created?

This is an editorial review before it is a reporting exercise. A clear journey makes the measurement easier to interpret because the team can describe what each step is meant to do.

Choose measures that explain a decision.

Begin with the information you can reliably collect and the decision you need to make. A useful reporting view might connect the creative shown, the page reached and an agreed qualified action. The exact measures depend on the business and its tools.

Avoid turning every available number into a target. A measure earns its place when it helps the team keep, change or stop something. Record definitions and reporting windows so successive reviews compare like with like.

Keep uncertainty visible.

Attribution can be incomplete. Small samples can be noisy. Different channels can contribute to the same decision. A clear report names those limits rather than decorating them with a confident percentage.

The aim is a better next move, not a perfect story about the last one. Give the handoff a clear purpose, inspect the whole journey and use the evidence at the level of confidence it supports.

Keep thinking
